Basics of Site Measuring

Starting our project with accurate site measurements is crucial for successful construction and renovation. This will help to keep your project on time and on budget. Below are steps to help you provide us with accurate measurements, and all you will need is paper (graph paper is ideal), pencil and a tape measure!

1. Prepare a Floor Plan. Putting together a floor plan of the space requires going through every nook and corner and drawing the shape of the footprint of your space. While doing this, you can check that you’ve gone through every side of your space. Take note of where doors, windows, electrical boxes and plumbing are.

2. Take Photos. As you draw the floor plan of your space, be sure to also take photos of every wall, with ceilings and flooring showing.

3. Measure Heights. Begin by measuring the distance between the floor and the ceiling. You will need to do this in every room affected by your scope of work.

4. Measure Lengths and Widths. Measure the overall lengths and widths of every room affected by your scope of work, and then record the details of existing build-outs.

5. Measure Openings. Pay attention to where doors and windows are and record the length and widths of windows and opening. Then, measure the setting off from walls and floors. Take photos or even a video reference.

6. Measure Plumbing and Electrical. Taking note of where these are located is important in a site measure. To locate plumbing, measure from the center of the plumbing fixture to the nearest wall.
